The reason for the use was the mechanical properties of the cable channels together with the tight fixing of the lid against opening and accidental, unwanted manipulation of the wiring. The plastic cable channels replaced the hot-dip galvanised channels that were originally considered and partially implemented (their use was abandoned due to the short lifetime of metal trays in the same price range.
